I was inveigled into thinking about books as a motif. The outcome of a thought process involving the ‘solidifying’ of books and the creating of a ‘book sculpture’ was something quite different: Circle-Cycling. Paper made from trees is rendered in plaster, and when treated in a certain way, becomes a tree again. This is an ongoing project.

Wood is an extremely versatile material. It can be hard or soft, dark or light. Its surface can be uniform or full of grain and movement. I have salvaged partially burned wood from fires to make work, burned work deliberately, and picked offcuts up from the floor of my workshop to make sculpture with. The scale of finishes available, from rough-cut to highly polished, is an endless source of fascination which can be played with in any number of combinations.

I am an aficionado of the sliding scale. In sculpture, the design process may finish on the drawing board or may continue in the making process, dictated by qualities of the materials or a wilfully lax approach to the initial design stage. Sometimes an object, or a lump of medium, has already designed itself and is simply awaiting validation through the most minimal alteration.
